Coconut Oil in Ayurveda: Kerala's Base Oil for Skin and Hair

By Daksha Organics team · Updated 6 Nov 2026 · 4 min read

Coconut oil (Narikela taila in Sanskrit, velichenna in Malayalam) is the everyday base oil of Kerala Ayurveda. It is considered cooling in nature, so it is the traditional carrier into which herbs like bhringraj and amla are cooked for hair, and the main fat in many traditional soaps. It nourishes and conditions; it is not a medicine on its own.

Why is coconut oil so central to Kerala Ayurveda?

Ayurveda chooses a base oil to suit the person, the season and the region. Sesame oil is the classical default across much of India because it is warming. Kerala, though, is hot and humid for most of the year and is covered in coconut palms — the state's name is often linked to kera, the coconut tree. A cooling oil made sense for the climate, and coconut oil became the household base for both cooking and body care.

How is coconut oil traditionally made?

Two traditional methods are still common in Kerala:

  • Copra oil: coconut kernel is sun-dried into copra and pressed in a mill (chakku). This gives the familiar everyday oil.
  • Virgin coconut oil (urukku velichenna): fresh coconut milk is slowly heated until the oil separates, leaving a fragrant oil. Some families make it at home for babies and hair.

How do herbs get into coconut oil?

The classical method is taila paka, oil cooking. Herb juices, decoctions (kashaya) and pastes (kalka) are added to coconut oil and simmered for hours until all water has gone. The herb's colour, aroma and oil-soluble constituents pass into the oil. Signs of a finished oil include the paste rolling into a wick and no crackling when a drop is put on a flame. This is how classical hair oils with bhringraj, amla and neem are made.

What is coconut oil traditionally used for?

For hair

  • a weekly or twice-weekly head massage before bathing
  • conditioning dry ends and reducing tangles
  • a cooling feel on the scalp in summer

For skin

  • a pre-bath body massage (abhyanga) in hot weather
  • softening dry heels, elbows and lips
  • baby massage in many Kerala homes

In soap

Coconut oil gives soap a firm bar and a quick, bubbly lather. Cold-process herbal soaps made in Kerala usually use it as the main oil. Our sister article on why coconut oil makes a good soap base explains the soap side in detail.

What has modern research looked at?

Coconut oil is unusual among plant oils because it is mostly saturated fat, rich in medium-chain fatty acids — lauric acid is the best known. Research has looked at how these small fatty acids can pass into the hair shaft better than many other oils, at coconut oil as a skin moisturiser, and at lauric acid's behaviour against microbes in the lab. The overall picture fits the tradition: coconut oil is a good conditioner and emollient.

Coconut oil suits most people, but some find it feels heavy on very oily or acne-prone facial skin. Patch test before using it on the face. Coconut allergy is uncommon but possible.

How to use coconut oil well

  1. In winter, coconut oil goes solid below about 24°C. Stand the bottle in warm water; do not microwave it.
  2. For hair, use 1–2 teaspoons; more is not better and is harder to wash out.
  3. For body massage, apply before bathing and rinse with a mild soap.
  4. Store away from sunlight and keep water out of the bottle so it stays fresh.

Key takeaways

  • Coconut oil (Narikela taila, velichenna) is the cooling base oil of Kerala tradition.
  • Herbs are cooked into it by the classical taila paka method.
  • It conditions hair, softens skin and gives soap a firm, lathering bar.
  • Research highlights its medium-chain fatty acids such as lauric acid.
  • Warm it gently in winter and patch test on facial skin.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Kerala use coconut oil instead of sesame oil?

Ayurveda considers coconut oil cooling, which suits Kerala's hot, humid climate, and coconut palms grow everywhere there. Sesame oil, which is warming, is more common elsewhere in India.

Why does coconut oil turn solid in winter?

Coconut oil is mostly saturated fat and solidifies below about 24°C. This is natural; warm the bottle in a bowl of warm water.

Is virgin coconut oil better for hair?

Both copra oil and virgin coconut oil condition hair. Virgin oil is made from fresh coconut milk and has a lighter aroma; the choice is mostly personal.

Can I use coconut oil on my face?

Many people do, but it can feel heavy on very oily or acne-prone skin. Patch test first and use only a small amount.
